The aim of the Help Yourself to Health course is for participants to gain the knowledge and skills needed to improve their health and wellbeing, and the health and well-being of their families. To have a greater awareness of local health services, when and where to access them.

The course is a five/six week programme for migrant and black and minority ethnic communities/patients.  It aims to support learning about NHS Services and how to access them appropriately, to raise awareness of key health prevention messages and help participants to take control of their general health and wellbeing. The programme takes place once a week for approximately 2 hours in community venues.

Help Yourself to Health aims to motivate and empower participants, promote self-care, improve lifestyle, reinforce positive health behaviours and reduce health inequalities within communities. Recruitment to the programme focuses on disadvantaged communities and health inequalities.

The key focus is to:

- enable participants to access NHS services effectively and to reduce inappropriate use of urgent and emergency care services

- empower individuals within communities to bring about positive change to health, improve quality of life and wellbeing for themselves and their families
