Wheelchair skills training helping young people in Hounslow

Young people taking part in wheelchair skills training

Friday 14 August 2015

Hounslow Wheelchair and Posture Management Service held a wheelchair skills event recently for young wheelchair users from Hounslow and Richmond and their families.

The skills day was held in association with Go Kids Go, a charity specialising in training young people in wheelchair skills and Oaklands School.

Nicola Alburto, Clinical Specialist Hounslow Wheelchair Service said: “Much fun was had by all at the training day, with the young people really enjoying activities such as wheelchair dancing and basketball.

“The attendees were able to learn or further develop key skills that will help improve their wheelchair skills and ability – as well as their independence - such as back wheel balancing and propelling up hills.”

The service has held training days for the past two years - to encourage independence and maximise the children’s abilities - with fantastic feedback being received from attendees and service users.

Hounslow Wheelchair and Posture Management Service has a wide range of wheelchairs available, including high spec. active user lightweight chairs. The service works closely with local suppliers, including ex-professional basketball players and charities, to provide a high level of expertise and wheelchairs to meet a wide range of needs.
