Currently 20.9% of four to five-year-olds are overweight or obese in Hounslow which is set to increase to 37.7% in 10 to 11-year-olds.

In a drive to support Hounslow families, Hounslow and Richmond Community Healthcare NHS Trust’s (HRCH) healthy weight team and Fusion are supporting National Obesity Week 2016 by organising two awareness events for local people at Hanworth Air Park Leisure Centre on 12 and 14 January.

The events in Hanworth are for people of all ages and will help parents and children reduce their sugar and fat intake to help manage obesity.  It will consist of nutritional drop-in sessions along with fun physical activities.

Change4Life have launched a Sugar Smart app and the campaign will also be promoted at the event set to enable parents to check sugar quantities by using the barcode on food labels. The campaign reveals the sugar content of everyday food and drink; a 43g chocolate bar contains six cubes of sugar; a 200ml juice drink contains over five cubes and there are nine sugar cubes in a can of cola, instantly taking children up to or over their recommended maximum for the day.

Fusion will provide one hour of physical activity for families and will give them advice and guidance to keep active. Prizes will be on offer for the first 10 families that attend each session.

The two events take place on Tuesday 12 January and Thursday 14 January, between 3.30-5pm, at Hanworth Leisure Centre, Uxbridge Rd, Middlesex TW13 5EG.
