A total of 731 Hounslow smokers took part in this year’s Stoptober challenge – with over 300 residents registering with Hounslow and Richmond Community Healthcare NHS Trust's stop smoking service throughout October for extra help and support to quit.
149 local people also attended the local NHS trust's stop smoking clinics in Hounslow to set quit dates with the stop smoking team during Stoptober as part of the services’ free stop smoking programme.
Research shows that by successfully stopping for 28 days as part of Stoptober, smokers are five times more likely to stop for good.
Councillor Ed Mayne, Cabinet Member for Public Health and Leisure at Hounslow Council said: “A smoker will always be able find a reason why it’s never a good time to stop smoking but Stoptober is the perfect time. This year Stoptober provided smokers with more engaging and personalised support than ever - which is key to quitting for good.
“Congratulations to those who have made it 28 days smoke free following Stoptober, the health benefits to giving up smoking are countless.
“I urge every smoker to seek support to give up cigarettes, it’s readily available in Hounslow.”
Winner of Hounslow Stoptober iPad prize draw announced
Local people who attended the trust’s stop smoking clinics to set quit dates during Stoptober were entered into a prize draw for the chance to win iPad – and the lucky winner, Roshan Patel, was picked at random by Hounslow and Richmond Community Healthcare NHS Trust’s chief executive Patricia Wright.
Since first attending one of the trust’s stop smoking clinics - Roshan has now successfully gone smoke-free for over 4 weeks with the help of Lavina Ramlingam, one of the team’s smoking cessation facilitators.
Roshan, at aged 33 has smoked for over 16 years and said: “It feels brilliant. The service accommodated my lifestyle and the stop smoking advisor gave me good advice and made the effort of constantly phoning me for my patches. It worked and now I have given up.”
Free NHS support to help Hounslow smokers
The Hounslow Stop Smoking Service, part of Hounslow and Richmond Community Healthcare NHS Trust, has been running for over 10 years and provides a wide range of support across the borough. The team offers local people access to weekly drop-in clinics, a free six week programme with flexible times and locations for support, and access to Nicotine Replacement Therapy such as patches, inhalers and medicine.
Free NHS drop-in clinics take place at convenient locations across Hounslow on various times and days each week - with NHS advisors available to provide quick, friendly and confidential one-to-one session for those wanting quit.
