Free help, support and health-checks for local smokers at drop-in event - Friday 4 September, Hounslow High Street
Smokers who complete the Stoptober challenge are five times more likely to succeed giving up for good
Hounslow Stop Smoking Service is urging local smokers to improve their health and save money by joining thousands of smokers across the country taking part in the 28-day Stoptober challenge throughout October.
To kick start the local campaign and help smokers gear up for the challenge, Hounslow Stop Smoking Service is holding a health promotion launch event on Friday 4 September, 9am to 5pm - at Hounslow High Street - in front of The Holy Trinity Church, opposite the Treaty Centre.
At the drop-in event, local smokers will have the chance to access the help and support they need to go smoke-free for Stoptober - as well as a range of free health checks - and advice from other health providers, including the British Heart Foundation and Prostate Cancer UK.
Stop smoking specialists from the team will be on hand between offering information and motivational advice, free CO readings, lung efficiency tests, general health checks, and information about the free support available through the local NHS Stop Smoking Service for Hounslow.
Ven Chennubotla, stop smoking specialist said: “The event will be a great opportunity for smokers to get a health check and gain a better idea about the damage caused by smoking. Smokers will be able to have a lung age test and their CO readings assessed, along with assessments of carbon monoxide poisoning and tar build-up caused by smoking – which results in compromised lung efficiency and breathing difficulty.
“So please, drop in on the day and get the help and support you need to go smoke-free, and learn the techniques you need to know to lead a healthy lifestyle.”
Other local health services will also be on hand at the event to help you with living a healthy lifestyle, including:
Healthy lifestyles team: Offering mini health checks (Height, Weight, BMI, Diabetic risk score and Blood Pressure test
British Heart Foundation: Information on Cardio Vascular Disease, diabetes, cholesterol and healthy eating
Prostate Cancer UK
Metropolitan Police: Information on safety and marking valuables to protect from theft
Frank Sims, chief executive of Hounslow and Richmond Community Healthcare NHS Trust, said: “If you are a smoker, giving up is absolutely the best thing you can do for your health - which is why we’re really pleased to be supporting the national Stoptober campaign this year. Research shows that people who successfully quit smoking for 28 days are five times more likely to stop for good, so taking part in Stoptober challenge is a great place to start.”
